I started off quite easily in the top-left, which made me double check that it was actually by Monk. Things soon got back to normal and there followed a satisfying struggle to finish. My apologies for the late posting, the morning has been an endless sequence of interruptions. There is certainly a Nina in here somewhere, I will start hunting for it now and update the post when I find it. Thank you Monk, excellent as always.

A familiar face this Friday with the return of the Don. Genial puzzle, with only a couple of clues that bothered me due to the fact that I didnt know these words existed. Typical smooth straightforward cluing for most part. Thanks Bradman, for stress-free passage today.

We were awaiting an Io puzzle with some trepidation, as we’d been told that they could be very challenging. As there is no facility to cheat or check one’s guesses and reverse-engineer the solutions on the FT, there’s no safety net for the blogger. We found this a challenge in parts, but mainly because of what we see as vagueness of some of the clues and obscureness of some of the answers. On the other hand, there were some really clever clues to compensate.

Prize puzzle from the Weekend FT of July 11, 2015.

My clue of the week has to be 16d, “Raw fish”, (BLEAK) in spite of its use of a rather obscure meaning of the word (the name of a small freshwater fish). I also especially like 27d (BALI).

Nearly forgot to get the blog out as today is a holiday in Singapore and I was going about my day in Saturday mode before it struck me late evening that I am not a time traveler. I really wish I had taken this on, on time so that I could have done justice to Chalmie. In my unnecessary haste to solve this quickly and put it up, I had to use google sooner than I would have liked to for some of the answers. I do think that this puzzle from Chalmie only goes to reinforce the opinion that he is one setter guaranteed to serve up a stunner of a crossword. Thanks a ton to him.

I found this very tricky. I gave up trying to solve this unaided after an hour or more and spent the rest of the morning trawling Wikipedia. Got there in the end! Thank you Gozo.
