I solved most of this puzzle collaboratively with friends at a croquet tournament, once we had polished off Everyman. To my surprise, we managed about 80% of the entries without access to a dictionary, and I finished it (with some confirmatory help from Chambers) once I got home. I hope that I may have persuaded some regular Everyman solvers to tackle Gemelo again.
I agree with bridgesong that this didn’t seem so hard for a Gemelo puzzle, even if I had a pretty empty grid after I had first read through the across clues and that included tentatively entering WAR at the end of 30a which I wouldn’t have done if I was solving on paper. I don’t know if the down clues were easier or I was just lucky to know the right things but CENTNER was the only answer that felt like a complete guess from the wordplay, but I didn’t really know the required meanings of TOE-IN and DEEPWATERMAN and I couldn’t quite remember if DOULEIA was a variant of DULIA in Chambers.
I liked the princess far, far away and the Belgian reporter, but in the latter case I remembered the former Peruvian currency and then having seen it clued as TINTIN with the outer letters removed before remembering that Tintin is Belgian. I think this is the second time Gemelo has used ‘East London’ with both words capitalised as a Cockney indicator and I was again fooled by expecting it to refer to the city in South Africa, but I have just seen that this city is now officially KuGompo City.
Thanks, Andrew and Gemelo.
