There was a tradition in both our families of solving Telegraph concise and cryptic crosswords. During our student days we moved on to the Observer. When we could afford a daily, we enjoyed the Guardian cryptics until the Indy arrived on the scene. Nowadays, Saturdays are not complete without the Inquisitor in the i paper. We never time ourselves but we do feel cheated if we finish quickly and really enjoy seeking out themes and ninas etc. We are now retired and when time allows, we supplement the daily Indy solve with the on-line Guardian cryptic, Genius and the occasional Quiptic. Finding fifteensquared was a revelation – we realised we are not alone in our attempts to stave off Alzheimer’s!

We found the top half of this puzzle much easier than the bottom.   This wasn’t helped by us entering DRAGOON for 30ac. Yes, we knew we couldn’t parse it but we thought … Read more >>

An enjoyable puzzle from Morph this week with some delightful surface readings. We were also very impressed by 17ac.   However,  we couldn’t help feeling slightly disappointed because we had expected to find … Read more >>

Well, it’s not Dac today (and it’s not the last Wednesday in the month). Is the Indy trying to get us used to changes in routine before going digital? This was an enjoyable … Read more >>

As expected we enjoyed this puzzle from Punk.   There are quite a few proper nouns among the entries, but we don’t think there’s a connection between them. All good fun, with only … Read more >>

Another great Phi-day puzzle, and one that we found a bit trickier than usual. As it’s Phi, we’re sure there is a theme, but we haven’t been able to find it yet. There … Read more >>
