Spectator 2768: Overheads by Fire

Hopefully this puzzle from Fire won’t go OVER my HEAD…

The preamble states that: “The nine unclued lights are all of a kind. Three are of two words. Ignore one apostrophe.

I made pretty good progress, and there were quite a few crossers starting to give the unclued entries some shapes. At some point I had a little moment of clarity looking at the title – what could go OVER a HEAD? A hat! And across the top I could fit TAM O’SHANTER, ignoring that apostrophe.

The rest went in in fairly quick order after that.

  • TAM O’SHANTER
  • TOP HAT
  • MOB CAP
  • DEERSTALKER
  • BALACLAVA
  • FEDORA
  • DERBY
  • BERET
  • FEZ

I did raise an eyebrow at BALACLAVA, which is maybe more of a head covering (topical at the moment!) – but Chambers does define it as a ‘knitted hat…‘.

3D HEPTATHLETE gave me a flashback to a heat in the Times National Championships a few years ago, when I bunged in PENTATHLETE instead of HEPTATHLETE (or the other way round) without checking the anagram fodder, and the error dropped me from about 16th to about 35th… This was back when the top 25 in each heat got free entry the following year, so I had to pay for my entry the next year, breaking a sequence of top 25 finishes (;+<).

Chapeaux to the Fire collective for a BERET enjoyable puzzle, and I trust all is clear below…otherwise I’ll be wearing a DUNCE’s hat!

A fun puzzle I thought. No list scrolling this week. I noted the use of “piece” in both 12a and 14a to indicate the hidden part which felt a bit samey, especially as they are close together if you are working in clue order.

Hat tips to mc and fire!

All fine for us too. Realizing the unclued items helped but a guess too early based on the final A alone, had PANAMA caused problems for 8d and 16d for a while before FEDORA took its place.
