Some very tricky, well disguised clues today. Mostly very good, but I thought 6 down was taking things a bit too far.

Across
8 Japanese lantern: very convoluted but I think it goes ja (yes, translated) + panes + elan + tern.
9 Peccadillo: Deck a pillow.
10 I’m pi
11 Lucrezia Borgia: z in (courage Blair I)*. It made the anagram a bit tricky if you assume “the ultimate” was an e.
15 Maenads: Mas around dane<.
20 Seismology: (goo messily)*.
22 For love nor money: norm one in (fool very)* + &lit.
Down
1 Waterloo Station: water + loos + Tati + on.
2 Calcic: Cal + CI (Channel Islands) + c.
4 Reclaim: EC in R L + aim.
5 Razor blade: read* around l in Zorba.
6 St Mirren: T in S Mirren. I really object to clueing queen as Mirren. I know she did play the queen in a film, but that doesn’t make here the queen. Does that mean the next time we see “policeman”, we should think that the answer might be John Thaw because he played Inspector Morse ?
14 Cromwell: m in row in cell.
16 Affiant: Hidden. Easy enough to spot, but a new word on me.
18 Igloos: (so o l GI)<.

Guardian 24,470 - Rufus

Posted by Ciaran McNulty on 18th August 2008

Ciaran McNulty.

I found this fairly easy going, even for a Monday. Mainly composed of a few anagrams, double-definitions and more than the usual amount of cryptic definitions, it was a nice distraction but not much to get your teeth into.

  • * = anagram
  • dd = double definition
  • cd = cryptic definition
  • dd/cd = a dd where one half of the definition is fairly cryptic

Across

  • 7. MEANNESS. MESS around ANNE.
  • 9. INURED. RUINED*
  • 10. RIPE. RIP + E
  • 11. NEAR ENOUGH. RANONEHUGE*. Not sure I liked ‘conglomerate’ as the anagram indicator.
  • 12. IDEALS. LADIES*.
  • 14. EXPOSURE. dd/cd. Disclosure/exposure sharing a suffix makes the dd feel weaker than it is.
  • 15. EDITORS. SOTIRED*.
  • 17. ANARCHY. ARCH in ANY.
  • 20. WATCH OUT. dd/cd.
  • 22. CASINO. cd.
  • 23. SEAMSTRESS. SEAM + STRESS.
  • 24. SNOW. S + NOW.
  • 25. TANNER. dd. Slang name for a sixpence.
  • 26. PREMISES. dd.

Down

  • 1. REMINDED. MIND in REED.
  • 2. KNEE. K + NEE.
  • 3. TENNIS. cd. Score one more than 40 to win.
  • 4. LIFESPAN. LIE + F + SPAN. Doesn’t quite work unless you use covering or time twice, I think.
  • 5. OUT OF SORTS. dd.
  • 6. BEGGAR. cd. They solicit for change, not sure why self-employed is relevant?
  • 8. SCALES. cd.
  • 13. ATTACHMENT. dd.
  • 15. ROOSTERS. ROSTERS around O.
  • 18. HAND OVER. dd.
  • 19. STREEP. PETERS*, a famous Meryl.
  • 21. ARENAS. cd
  • 22. CASKET. cd? A bit too literal for my taste.
  • 24. STIR. A triple-definition with a well worked surface.

Private Eye/Cyclops Crossword 371 - Easy does it

Posted by beermagnet on 18th August 2008

beermagnet.

I don’t note solving times but maybe I ought to start as I’m pretty sure I must’ve had a Personal Best for this one. Must’ve been about 15 minutes. There was nothing here to cause a hold-up. Last clue in, 14/27 Alistair Darling, I would have got with fewer crossing letters if I’d had to and I was quite surprised to find a complete grid.
Of course, looking back on it now (the next day) I realise this was one of the easiest Eye crosswords for some time.

Across
1 APPEAL PEA inside (LAP)* Anagrind: dancing
4 SCRAMBLE (MARBLES C[onservative])* Anagrind: lost. The “Be a crawler” definition nicely misled me to think of insects on the first pass
10 GOOLIES GOALIES swap A for O Favourite clue:
Footballers get nothing for a set of balls (7)
11 FLATTER L inside FATTER
12/25 BEDPAN CD that looks like a pretty straight definition
13 OPINION POLL O PINION (LOP)* [too]L Anagrind: off
14/27 ALISTAIR DARLING ([B]lair as it)* then favourite=darling Anagrind: developed.  Is Cyclops out of date? I thought Miliband was the favourite now
16 PISS-UP Leak, then UP from “afoot” as in “what’s up”
19 BO-PEEP PEE inside BOP
20 CHUTZPAH C[herie] HUT (ZAP)* H[ard] Interesting anagrind: Alien
23 MISCONSTRUE M IS CONS TRUE
26 ATISHOO (IS A HOOT)* Anagrind: broadcast
28 THE TROTS DD Ref Leon Trotsky and Trotskyites in general known as Trots
29 JERKIN JERK IN (no points for writing in merkin)

Down
1 ALGEBRA A (LEG)* BRA Anagrind: kinky
2 PROUD (OR)< inside PUD
3/24 A BIT OF THE OTHER (BAREFOOT HIT THE)* Anagrind: rocks.  A bit weak to have THE in the fodder as well as the answer
5 COFFIN Homophone COUGHING (Hawking) without the G (big money).   Hardly need the “missing big money” part of the clue in my opinion.
6/17 A PAIN IN THE ARSE (TRAINEESHIP A[l]AN)* Anagrind: buggered up
7 BOTTOMS UP BOTTOM SUP
8 EARFLAP (FEAR)* LAP Anagrind: about
9 ASPIRIN (IN PARIS)* Anagrind: screwing
15 IMPASSIVE I’M PASSIVE
18 CHARADE AD inside (ARCHE[r])* Anagrind: devious
19 BOMBAST BOMB AS T[ory]
21 HANDGUN (HUNG AND)* Anagrind: quartered
22 ESCORT CD
23 PRICK DD
