* = anag, < = reversed, () = dropped
A slightly easier puzzle from Tees compared to some recent entries, although I have no idea who the person in 24 across was.
| Across | |
|---|---|
Tennis: (Sin + net)<
Pub Crawl: Cryptic def.
Cornelia: Cornea around li.
Oracle: (C)oracle.
Rocking Chair: Cryptic def.
Beef: Ref to Beef Wellington.
Glad Rags: Gags around lad + r.
Pastrami: Past + ram + i. Good surface definition based on “smoked”, which referred to the type of meat but appeared to mean cigarettes.
Troy: Try (rugby score) around o.
Sea of Galilee: (Feel as goalie)*. The anagram wasn’t difficult to spot, but it was good to see the apparent football theme kept going with the use of “nets” as the definition.
Potter: Double def.
Saunders: The wordplay is obviously SAS around under, but I have no idea who Saunders was. Tried to look it up in Wikipedia, but there were dozens of entries.
Werewolf: Took me a while to get the wordplay in this one, but I think it’s (few)< around (lower)<.
Exmoor: (Romeo)* around x.
| Down | |
Nonprofit: (on for pint)*
Select: Double def, but well-disguised to look like an anagram.
Brougham: (Mab)< around rough (long grass in golf).
Reach: R + each.
Wellington. W + ellington (Duke Ellington, a jazz player).
Sea Anemone: (Aeneas)* + mone(y)
Rotterdam: Rotter + dam.
Kangaroo: (Go + anorak)*
Claude: laud in CE (Claude was Debussy’s first name).
| 21/5/2 | In the playing fields of Eton: (y + define fight Napoleon lost)* + &lit. |
Argo: (C)argo
