Solving time:  22 minutes

A lovely cinematic experience from Brummie today.  Many of the clues shared the solution to 9 as a definition.  The usual smattering of clever and nudge nidge wink wink clues as well.

Independent 6626/Phi

Colin Blackburn.

I raced through this puzzle much more quickly than usual for Phi. Then I hit the buffers with 11 and 13. I’m sure I’m missing something very simple.

Across
1 RHODES SCHOLAR — RHODES + CH in SOLAR — US students studying in Oxford might be Rhodes Scholars if their lucky/clever.
8 WOOF — WOO(d)+F — good surface here losing the definition well.
12 TEA-TABLE — (i)T+EATABLE &lit
13 ???WOMAN — ? — The full clue is “Wife embraced by excellent old Italian member of armed forces (8)” The only answer I can see fitting is BATWOMAN, a female servant in the armed forces.
16 SHALOM — SH + initials —
20 HELSINKI — H + SIN in LIKE*
23 FLAT RACING — ALF< + TRACING — I had my doubts about this one, it fits but I did wonder if a man other than ALF might provide another solution.
24 URDU — oUR DUty
Down
1 ROO — ROO(m) — bounder is ROO as in kangaroo rather than cad or rat.
2 ORFEO — OR+FE+O — that underworld chap.
4 SPLIT INFINITIVE — SPLIT + INFINIT(y) + I’VE — excellent ref to Star Trek.
11 F???H ?E?L?R — ? — I’m sure this is a cryptic definition, FAITH HEALER fits the grid but not the clue. The full clue is, “One keen to get hands-on experience of suffering (5,6)”
17 MUNDANE — UND in MANE — German and = und.
22 SQUIB — SQUI(d)+B — ref. damp squib.
25 DIE — DI(m)E

Independent 6621/Dac (05-01-08)

neildubya.

Dac is well-known amongst Indy solvers but we’re used to seeing him on a Wednesday so it was something of a surprise to see his name next to the Saturday prize puzzle. This was a little more difficult than the Wednesday puzzles but still much easier than we’re used to for a Saturday. Lots of fun though, with some very nice clues (12a and 6d were my favourites).

Across
1 A, LIB in HUT
5 CO’S SACK
9 RECCE - I think this is partly a homophone clue: “damaged vehicle” = “wreck”.
10 UR in PEN,IOUS - I thought “word of hesitation” was going to be UM or ER and it took a while to rule both of those out.
12 RU, IN in (TEAM)* - this is very well done indeed: “Think rugby team rearranged home fixture?” I especially liked “fixture” to indicate IN appearing in (TEAM)*.
20 ASH in TRIER
23 A,X,MIN,(REST)*
24 HOUSE - double definition. HOUSE is TV series starring Hugh Laurie.
25 (RUSS[-i]A)*,ER
26 S in DECENT - “track down” is very misleading here and it took me a while to consider a meaning other than the obvious one.

Down
1 HO,OW in RITZ - Vladimir HOROWITZ. Thanks to Mrs D for knowing this one.
3 (THERE’S A HERB FERN)* - BREATH FRESHENER.
5 (CUTS ONIONS)* - CONTUSIONS.
6 STRAIGHT FLUSHES - the wordplay is obvious enough but the definition - “the runs” - isn’t. In poker, a STRAIGHT FLUSH is a hand of 5 cards in sequence and all the same suit. If it’s ace high, it’s called a royal flush (which is the highest ranking poker hand, followed by a straight flush)
8 K,I M in SET - I knew the word KISMET but didn’t realise it was a musical (among other things).
13 CHIC,HESTER - I was a bit unsure about this when I filled it in but I don’t really see what else it could be.
15 END in VE,USE
16 AD,HE,RENT
19 MM in (ALAS)* - “about eight years ago” would be 2000 or MM in roman numerals.
22 FR,ED - “English” isn’t really needed here but I guess it makes the clue read a bit better.

Inquisitor 53 SOME OF THE THINGS by Quixote

Posted by Hihoba on 11th January 2008

Hihoba.

It’s that time of year! “In the Bleak Midwinter” last week and “The Twelve Days of Christmas” this week.

Two of our tiumvirate went to the Temple Church Choir’s carol service at the Royal Courts of Justice this year and one of the readings was the hilarious John Julius Norwich version of the twelve days’ correspondence, ending (appropriately) with the Solicitor’s letter.

So the down clues had letters missing which spelled out MY TRUE LOVE SENT TO ME, and this led to three-letter extracts of eleven of the the twelve presents. The twelfth was derived from the day number and, as such, constitutes a fowl (sic - a lot of birds involved in the presents!), for which one of our number has issued a yellow card!

Each extract was a valid word or name. In diagram order they were:

Across, top to bottom:
A PARtridge in a pear tree
Eleven PIPers piping
Two turtLE Doves
Seven sWANs a-swimming
Twelve dRUMmers drumming
Three fRENch hens

Down, left to right:
FOUR calling birds Yellow card for this one!
Eight mAIDs a-milking
Ten lordS A-Leaping
Nine ladies DANcing
Five gOLD rings
Six geeSE A-laying

Solving time : Done in bits, but completed in a couple of hours (not at Biddlecome speed!) and interrupted by a four-and-a-half-hour drive along the busy A303!

Across
1 PENAL CODE (Deal one PC)*
8 AVAILE - where would crossword setters be without Spenser? AIL in AVE
9 LAVA hidden
10 UNBE (not Spenser, but still pretty obsolete!) in SAM
12 (d)RO(PINE)SS
14 ONCUS = bad. I’ve used many terms for getting drunk, but ON wasn’t one of them!
17 KREESE - same as kris. First time I’ve seen REES for Welshman.
18 S(M)ASH
20 ARIUS (SURA rev round I) - originator of the Arian heresy.
23 L(1A1)SE
25 SERA+C
29 CASELOAD (does a cal)*
30 TIR(ASS)E
31 Prince IGOR - GI rev + O(ther) R(anks)
32 CAL(heat)THA(t) - marsh marigold.
33 CLAMP (tread heavily - I say clump!) + DOWN
Down
1 M P(erturb)A + PRIM + KA (soul)
2 Y NAP(sleep) on PAY (settle)
3 T LLANOS - TALL rev + SON rev
4 R OPUSCULA - I had opuscule at first which made 25A impossible! (CORPUS)* + LA
5 U ELBA - BLUE rev + A
6 E PA + ELLE + A
7 L RAM + PLace - a new onion to me!
11 O A + ODE’S - Milton’s version of Hades.
13 V VILE + US - I’m a bit dubious about US for AmericaN.
15 E NEBRASKA (Arabs keen)*
16 S MALL in SS - I just checked; SS stands for Schutzstaffel - I’d always assumed it was S.S. and represented two words!
19 E HE(explosive) + A D(uke) + MEAN
21 N RAN IN
22 T INTRON - genetic stuff is INN round TROT
24 T TIC(k)ECAP ( pace rev)
26 O POOR + TO (before)
27 M STIR - MERITS reversed, minus E (base)
28 E NARC - a drug busting cop (US) crane (= cranium) rev
